Susie's mother: Would you like to hear a story?
All the children: Yeeees!
Susie's mother: This is the story of the Tortoise and the Hare.
1. Once upon a time, a tortoise was walking slowly along the road - plod,
plod, plod. She saw a hare that was running and skipping down the road
- whoosh!
2. The hare saw the tortoise, stopped and laughed and laughed.
"You are so SlOW," laughed the hare. "Yes," said the tortoise, "I am slow.
But, let's have a race. I'll race you to the top of the hill. Can you see it?"
"Yes," said the hare "I can see it. I'll happily race you there. That's very funny!"
3. The hare called his friends to watch the race.
The fox said: "Ready, steady ..... go!"
4. The tortoise started walking very slowly - plod, plod, plod.
The hare ran off very fast - whoosh!

5. After a few minutes, the hare looked back and saw the tortoise was far
away. "The tortoise is so far away," he said. "I've got time to sleep."
He sat down under a tree, closed his eyes and went to sleep.
6. The tortoise carried on walking - plod, plod, plod . Up the hill she walked
- plod, plod, plod. She heard snoring. "Who's that? Goodness! It's the hare!
He's asleep. Good." She carried on walking - plod, plod, plod.
7. The hare woke up. "Where's the tortoise? She's not down there.
She's up there. She's at the top."
8. "Aha!" Shouted the tortoise. "Slow but sure wins the race!"
All the animals shouted: "Hurray for the tortoise!"
Ask the pupils to look at the story cards on the board.

Hares are bigger, heavier and stronger than rabbits. Hares have longer ears
than rabbits. Hares can jump further than rabbits.
Baby hares are born fully-haired, with open eyes and can jump.
Baby rabbits are born with no hair, with their eyes closed and they can't jump.
They can't do anything. They need their mother.
Both rabbits and hares eat at night. They like to eat berries and also green
things like leaves and grass.
Isn't nature wonderful!
